What are you trying to sew? It’s just a simple sleeveless bodice and full skirt! I was hoping to draft something basic that I could then add on to to make all kinds of variations.
Ahh right. Ugh, I wish I could have taken you with me to this fitting workshop I went to which was given by Connie Crawford (she’s the lady who make the frumpy plus size patterns for Buttericks, there is the occasional gem though). It was all about draping for fitting and fitting for the plus size body.
The core of the workshop was that her basic pattern block is Buttericks 5300.

Clik here to view.An how once you get a good fit on that you can chop and change it to make pretty much anything. You may not want to spend the extra money on buying another pattern but I can see cutting the top so there’s no opening on the front (fold in the button allowance and cut it on the fold of fabric), shorten the waistband so the fisheye darts are normal waist band darts, play with the neckline (view A without the collar is a basic jewel neckline so that should be pretty easy) to how you want it and then attach a circle or gathered skirt to the waist line. Voila, Natalie’s awesome new dress.
I’m not sure if that’s more work than what you’re already doing. I’m a fellow crafty fattie who’s often just as frustrated by patterns as you are.
You’re not too fat to sew, patterns just suck sweaty balls.
The image doesn’t work but I googled the pattern and it was one I’d come across in my searching! I was looking for a basic bodice and it seems to do the trick, I’m so glad my self taught ways aren’t completely guiding me astray!
