So the other day, I uploaded a picture of a woman who I was told was eating alone in pizza hut. It seemed funny at first, the idea of an overweight woman not actually being alone due to having food, etc. However, it doesn’t seem so funny now.

It’s been reblogged quite a few times and understandably I’m getting hate for it. I can’t begin to explain how guilty I feel. Like, people are going to judge me now for that. I know there are other people in this world who might make jokes or poke fun at things like this, but taking a step back and looking at it from an outer perspective makes me realise I wouldn’t like it if somebody did it about me.

Shit goes on in the world, and I’ve proven to myself that it’s always going to be about in some way or form and I don’t think it’ll ever stop. As the human race progresses more things will have the piss taken out of them and I don’t think it’ll ever end.

What I’m saying is sorry. If you’re reading this after clicking on my blog to see what a disgrace I am then this is to you. I’m sorry for offending people and believe me, I feel bad. Real bad. Sometimes it takes a lot more for you to realise when you’ve done wrong.

So now the question is, what the fuck are you gonna do about it? Guilt is not productive. A public apology is nowhere near enough, but it’s a decent start. Now: think about everything in your life that contributed to thinking it was okay for you to take that woman’s picture without her knowledge and start it circulating on the internet, and how fucked up all of it is. Educate yourself about fat acceptance and fat hatred, and how fat hatred is tied to sexism, classism and ableism.

Then educate others. When your friends make fat jokes, call them on it. When a TV show makes a fat joke, point it out to whoever’s watching with you. Pay attention to the discourse on “the obesity epidemic.” When people around you start talking about it, challenge them. Speak the fuck up. For some of us, it’s not a choice.
