I used to drive a Beetle and would usually start hydroplaning when it started spitting. Apparently that’s when the road is most greasy, because the water hits the dirt and grease and mixes to form a deadly formula. When it starts raining properly, that mostly gets washed away!
But yeh, I still remember the back of my bug spinning out as I went around a corner. SCARY. I also broke down on the Gateway at midnight with no phone credit, and the clutch cable snapped in the middle of the intersection at Market Square. I’d had it with my car by then - when the tow truck came I threw the keys at him, told him to dump it at my mechanics, and that I never wanted to drive the stupid car again.
