In 2010, any use of the phrase ‘We Australians’, necessarily describes an increasingly diverse population with a multitude of concerns. How is our globalising contemporary culture restrained by the consequences of our national history and the legacy of cultural myths?
Social and cultural diversity are often assigned value and sensationalised at the discretion of media, advertising, political and economic interest. Mainstream media representations can tend to be polarizing and divisive. In this context, how are the subjective experiences of Australians accommodated in, or excluded from, the stereotypes that surround us? How do we form a sense of ‘community’, in an era of globalisation and displacement, as it specifically relates to Australian identity and culture. Does it make sense to speak of the Australian “public”, or rather should we be attentive to the existence of multiple “publics” each with their own “public interests”.
Our aims are: to create a platform for challenging commentary on contemporary Australian identity, culture and society, to establish a network of artists engaged in such work, and to catalyse new work and collaborations.
Application deadline: 1 NOVEMBER 2010
…!!! ZOMG THIS IS AWESOME
God I’d love to do something about the emerging fat activist culture in Australia. I WISH I WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER! I could just use my iphone and whimsy up the photos. Would they fund me flying around Australia to photograph people? ARGH.
