This link will probably only work today, but there’s a short video on this news site about Melissa Bacon, who’s a size 26 and feels she can’t get a job because of discrimination about her size. It sort of pisses me off how the interviewer asks her if she’s just being over-sensitive, and how the careers advisor tells her to write her applicable skills on her CV and try to match them to a job that fits, which is… hardly rocket science, right? It also bothers me that at the end Melissa says “us fat people can work just as well as you skinny people”, which is so othering on both sides that it makes me hope she finds out about fat activism soon and is able to stop taking no for an answer.
There are laws against fat discrimination (and height discrimination!) in San Francisco; I’m trying to contact a woman who’s campaigning to get them introduced in London. Seems like Brisbane should be the next target, eh?
P.S. I am sure she, like Linda Bacon, has heard pretty much every joke in the book about her name, so don’t bother, if you were gonna…
P.P.S. pretty sure the comments will be triggering.
OH ACA wanted someone from Axis of Fat to appear on this story to support the fat discrimination side but I’m interstate and my other co-bloggers were bizzay! FAT DISCRIMINATION IS REAL, SHITTTT.
(I might be tipsy)
