We were in Year 8 and when we got to the question “Is french kissing a sin?” in Life Skills class I put up my hand and asked the teacher, “Are you serious? This is bullshit. How is this going to stop teen pregnancy?”
Two or three girls from my high school were pregnant by the end Year 12, all quietly “left” the school.
I spent this arvo hanging out with campercy and Janey. Cam bought a treasure trove of antique sex education books at the Lifeline Bookfest and I was thrilled to discover that she’d picked up Becoming A Woman, which was the book used in the “Life Skills” class at my all-girls Catholic High School.
I loved reading the more liberal sex manuals Cam bought from 1968 - far more enlightened than this Christian book, which was published in 1995.
I am thankful that the Anglican girls’ high school I attended from year 10-12 did not include any of this material. We did watch a video of a child birth, and we did discuss contraception and consent in Life Skills (taken by the school’s male chaplain who was a pretty cool guy).
