I’m thinking about redesigning definatalie.com. I have to do a huge overhaul of categories because the current ones aren’t working for me, and I’m sure they are a bit hard to navigate for readers too. For instance, if you just want to look at outfit posts and have to sort through all the posts in Fashion that include things I’ve seen, things I’m inspired by, things I want to make, as well as outfits… it takes a long time.
I know many blog ~professionals~ count that extra time spent on site in analytics as a good thing but I don’t think that is true. It is frustrating for me as a reader of other blogs, and as an author of my own content!
Another thing that bothers me about my layout is the magazine style theme. I’m concerned it isn’t very accessible, nor does it show all the things I blog about. As a blogger who has pulled back from regular and consistent content production, I notice that my front page doesn’t move much. It bothers me that old content stays on the front page while newer content is pushed off.
I assumed when I was designing my theme that people mostly read my blog through an RSS aggregater like Google Reader or Blog Lovin’, but that’s a huge assumption. Even though I think magazine style layouts are neat, I am forcing my own stylistic desires on readers rather than helping them read more easily.
So I’m after feedback! How do you read blogs? What is helpful for you? Do you have any links to great WordPress themes?
