What kind of fabric is it? Sometimes stretch or jersey fabric skips stitches, but you can use a blue-tipped (or round tipped? I can’t remember) needle and zig-zag stitch to counteract it.
It’s a stretch fabric, I was using a ball point needle and changed it to a new one just to make sure it wasn’t the needle. Then I fiddled with all the tensions and settings, but it was Nick that persevered and figured out I was probably using the wrong bobbin. (I have a lot of clear bobbins!) The stretch stitches on my machine are all pretty good, it was just that damn bobbin issue that I was overlooking.
