CAN A GIRL WITH ARMPIT HAIR BE ATTRACTIVE?

Inevitably last tuesday when i went to the pool with my friend sarah who also has hairy pits, we cleared the hot tub in no less than 3 seconds—TWO SEPARATE TIMES all because because we put our arms up, revealing a patch of unkempt unshaven hair beneath our arms. it has literally become a social experiment to us—how long does it take for people to become SO uncomfortable by our hair that they leave. It usually starts with them gawking, then trying to “subtly” nudge their friends, then nervous giggling then just leaving. Other ladies get incredibly touchy in the face of awesome empowered sensual hairy ladies. I am by no means passing judgement on women who decide to shave, i am however, drawing attention to the fact that women (and men) become almost fearful of a woman who does not succumb to certain beauty standards. I think that its because they’ve never thought of not shaving. I know i certainly didn’t think about my “choice” (what IS choice judith?) (<—-judith butler reference…i AM a nerd) to start shaving when i was about 12 (ugh, nightmares). It’s just interesting to see how offended people get by something so natural. (yeah yeah i know, what else is new)

also i got a cute strapless dress, fuck the world, hail satan?

You’ll never see the pool or hot tubs cleared when a guy enters with hairy pits.

I’m sorry, but does my pit hair have radioactive toxins or some shit?

I actually can’t believe this. Wow.

Wow, people are so… offensive when they’re offended!

This post has given me the courage to NOT retreat back into “acceptable” body hair grooming. As a fat woman, if I don’t groom myself to look the “best” (read: most acceptable) I can look, I am a target. I don’t usually shave, I hate it. It feels uncomfortable, and it bothers me that I give into societal conditioning whenever I plan to wear something that will put my pits on show.

I’m going to be true to myself and my politics and I’m not going to shave. A while ago I was talking to Margarita about the notion of “fanciness” and she said that “fancy” could be the heteronormative-like lady’s “femme”, and it’s something I’ve thought a lot about since. Because lots of people seem to read what I write and are now using and defining “fance” and “fancy” for themselves, I feel confident further defining my “fance” by eliminating acceptable body hair grooming.

Feels good. Scary, but good.

DISCLAIMER: This was written quickly and is not really well rounded. Tumblr is my “place for muddling through hard things” it seems!
