“A curious transformation is happening to Victoria’s vowels, and it’s not going unnoticed. For a while now, many Victorians have been confusing “el” sounds with “al” sounds, so that celery sounds like salary, pellet like palate and telly like tally. In other words, Victorians don’t know if they’re Allan or Ellen.”

Walcome to Malbourne

Finally! An answer to an existential crisis regarding the way I pronounced my own name. Sometimes people tell me off for saying ‘Allie’ rather than ‘Ellie’.

I am one of those people. Why is this a thing? Why is this a Melbourne thing? This is wrong. You are wrong, Allie, speak correctly.

While we’re on the subject, can I just point out that the way Melbournians pronounce “oo” words (school, cool, pool, etc.) is weird? They pronounce “cool” as though it’s “coorhl” and mock me, a native Queenslander, for emphasising the double o’s.

My uncle, who lived in Melbourne and Tasmania much of his life, always used to mock me for the way I said school, pool, etc too!!
