I have been thinking about this for a while, if I’m honest, and the only thing stopping me was laziness, and oftentimes more confusingly… this insecurity I have when it comes to reading images. Sometimes I just don’t get subtleties, and other times I don’t get cultural references. So I am worried I won’t do a good enough job and that I will confuse people, but maybe that’s only a worry and not an actual thing?
I have been writing image descriptions in the “alt” tag on my blog for months and haven’t struggled too much, but I am given to being long-winded and I’ve read that descriptions ought to be as concise as possible. I hope it helps people using screen readers, but then I think about other people not using screen readers… they might not see the image description in the alt tags of the html. So perhaps I should put the description underneath the image too?
I want to contribute to a more accessible internet. If anyone has ideas or suggestions please do let me know!
