Do you have any drafting skillz? I’m teaching myself to draft cause I’m so bored with what the mainstream pattern companies offer clothing wise.My drafting skills aren’t that great, and…
Not many online resources I’m afraid, but I have found websites which focus on historical costume making to be very helpful. This one takes you through a basic skirt in depth: http://www.fashion-era.com/Pattern_drafting/pattern_drafting_introduction_skirt1_why_draft.htm
Really, I’ve found it to be a matter of trial and error myself. Getting a tonne of cheap calico and making a toile of your pattern seems to be what a lot of people do. Man, the maths of creating blocks drives me insane too.
I’m a total newb at it myself and started with altering store patterns to fit me better or to size them up, I have very extreme measurements, anything which fits over my arse gapes at the waist and looks like a sack.
Are you familiar with the book series “Fit for Real People”? My Mum had a copy which I inherited from her (read: took when she wasn’t looking) and it has been amazing! I’ve learned so much from it. It’s an old book but still in print and I’m pretty sure you should be able to find it at any library. Amazon link here: http://www.amazon.com/Fit-Real-People-Clothes-Pattern/dp/0935278435
Also, as I was finding the Amazon link for Fit for Real People I found this book which might interest you: http://www.amazon.com/Sewing-Plus-Sizes-Creating-Clothes/dp/1561585513/ref=pd_sim_b_4 Sewing for Plus Sizes. It looks a bit pre-political, lots of stuff about “flattering” the plus size figure (ugh) but it seems like it should have a lot of practical info. I know from your posts though that money is tight, you might try looking for it at the library as well.
PS. I bought one of your fat necklaces the moment I heard they were back in stock. I’m so excited about getting it, love your blog and your work :)
PPS. Fellow Qld fattie, hollaaaaa
I SAW THAT YOU BOUGHT ONE! I think you were the first :D
I have been recommended the “Fit for Real People” book before, and I really must get it because I love the cover. It looks like the dressmaker is lovingly squeezing her client’s lovely hip. RAUNCH.
ETA IT APPEARS THAT DISCUSSION OF CAKES, TWO OF HAS CONFUSED ME, it’s the second book that has the rad cover.
