Pilar Echalecu, “La Entrega” (2010)

In breaking news in censorship, Pilar Echalecu’s paintings have been removed from an exhibition in Madrid. Typically Spanish reports:

The CajaMurcia Foundation has withdrawn five paintings from an exhibition in Madrid ‘in order not to upset anyone’s sensibilities’.

The show by artist Pilar Echalecu is called ‘De cuerpos y almas - Of bodies and souls’ and the paintings censored at the last minute show scenes from same-sex couples.

The artist told Público newspaper that after a year and a half work she was told 15 days before the opening that such paintings could not be shown, and then later added a ban on a painting showing nude pregnant women.

The artist said that her intention with the show was to show the whole spectrum of human relations. ‘I thought such matters had been overcome these days’, she said.

Art censorship makes me sick. This work is beautiful.
