This piece still confronts me and it came out of my own pen. I came to a huge realisation the other week that even though I am aware of my privileged bits I can still hold deeply prejudiced feelings. It’s in the realising of this that I can challenge those assumptions because defending and protecting privilege is a pretty defensive, angry and self centred thing, not to mention completely derailing. I used to spend so much time defending my hurtful assumptions instead of admitting them and checking them and moving the focus from me to where it rightfully should be.
