“Prosecution next outlined the charges (under s 225 and 226) that the couple face, and added that for an abortion to be deemed lawful in Queensland, a woman has to prove necessity, ie, that she needed an abortion to preserve her life or her physical or mental health. They allege that there is no evidence either of necessity or of the belief of necessity on behalf of the couple, implying the absence of this is enough to prosecute - sending a worrying sign of the implications of the trial outcome on other women across the state.”

I read this paragraph of the Children By Choice campaign update at least five times before I could comprehend what it actually means. It means that, in Cairns, there is actually a prosecution lawyer arguing that Tegan Leach should go to jail because she elected to end a pregnancy that did not endanger her physical or mental health.

In 2010!

In the age where feminism isn’t relevant anymore, there is a man in court arguing that a girl didn’t need to get an abortion to save her life, therefore she committed a crime and should go to jail.

In the age of apparent gender equality, a debate is going on right now about whether it’s against the law or not if women exercise choice over their own bodies.

AND THIS IS A VALID FACT OF LAW.

Women of Queensland, GET MAD.

The fact that the issue of a woman’s right over her own body is even being debated by a prosecution lawyer in an attempt to send Tegan Leach to jail simply reeks of misogyny and backwater, conservative power dynamics and it is incomprehensible that such a fundamental issue could be debated in a courtroom in 2010.

Oh Queensland, how can I defend you now?

SOOOO FUCKING ANGRY ABOUT THIS WHOLE SITUATION.
