“Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, ‘She doesn’t have what it takes.’ They will say, ‘Women don’t have what it takes.’”
- Clare Booth Luce
One of the things that centralized identities never have to worry about is representing their entire marginalized group. White men can succeed without being a token to their race or sex. Straight couples can get divorces and have kids without jeopardizing an entire movement for the private familial freedoms for other straight couples. Christian people can put bumper stickers on their car and worship publicly without being seen as a fanatic or as scary. People in the periphery do have to work doubly hard for the same credit that privileged groups take for granted every day. -Chris (via agirlcalledchris) (via skirtonfire)
